About City

Amsterdam is the capital of Netherlands and is one of the most populous cities. It is the western part of the country located in the province of North Holland. Amsterdam was originated from a small fishing village in late 12th century and evolved as a most important port in the world during the 17th century due to new innovations in trade and business especially in the sector of diamond and finance. Amsterdam is considered as the financial and cultural center of the Netherlands and one among the top financial centres in the Europe. Amsterdam is also considered as the alpha world city. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and Defence Line of Amsterdam (19-20th century) are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Amsterdam is the headquarter of the seven top companies among world’s best 500 companies including ING and Philips. In 2012, the EIU announced Amsterdam as the second best city to live and ranked 12 on quality of living for environment and infrastructure. It is also bagged 3rd position in innovation by Australian innovation agency. The Amsterdam seaport is the second largest port in the country and fifth largest among the ports in the Europe.

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the world’s oldest stock exchange. Major tourist attractions of Amsterdam are;  Rijksmuseum, historic canals, Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, and Amsterdam Museum etc. Amsterdam’s cannabis coffee shops are the major point of attractions and attracting more than 5 million international visitors annually. It is recorded as the world's most multicultural city with around 177 nationalities staying together.

Amsterdam has an oceanic climate influenced by North Sea in the west. Both winters and summers are mild. Sometimes, winter is too cold and occasionally summer is quite warm. Cloudy and damp days are common during the cooler months of October through March.

Amsterdam experienced an influx of religions and cultures after the Second World War. With 180 different nationalities Amsterdam is home to one of the widest varieties of nationalities of any city in the world.

Transportation include sixteen tram routes and four metro routes with a fifth route to be added at the end of 2017. Four fare-free GVB ferries carry pedestrians and cyclists across the IJ lake to the borough of Amsterdam-Noord, and two fare-charging ferries run east and west along the harbour and there are privately operated water taxis, a water bus, a boat sharing operation, electric rental boats and canal cruises, that transport people along Amsterdam's waterways. International coach services are managed by Eurolines, IDBUS and Megabus from Zuiderzeeweg in the east of the city.

Amsterdam has two universities: the University of Amsterdam, and the VU University Amsterdam. Other institutions for higher education include an art school – Gerrit Rietveld Academie, a university of applied sciences– Hogeschool van Amsterdam, and Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Amsterdam's International Institute of Social History is one of the world's largest documentary and research institutions concerning the history of the labour movement. Amsterdam's Hortus Botanicus is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, founded in the 17th century.
